What Is Leadership, Really? Going Back to the Word’s Roots

What is leadership, really? Human history is full of leaders, and yet we still can’t agree on what leadership actually is. In this post, we go back to the roots of the word itself — and land somewhere surprisingly simple: leadership is less about what you do to people, and far more about who they become in your presence.

Human history is filled with leaders. And yet, we still can’t stop debating what leadership actually is. So let me go back to the origin of the word for a moment.

What is leadership, at its root?

The word “leadership” carries two roots. The first, lædan, means to guide — to show the way, to go before. The second, leder-ship, points to something quieter and deeper: to shape character. Not the leader’s own character, but the character of the people they lead.

Sit with that for a second. It reframes the whole thing. Leadership isn’t a position you hold or a title on a door — it’s the mark you leave on the people who follow you.

Leadership is the imprint you leave

Think about the leaders who stayed with you. They probably weren’t the most senior, the most charismatic, or the most powerful. They were the ones who changed something in you.

Maybe it was a manager who believed in you before you believed in yourself. A senior colleague who never made you feel small for not knowing. Someone who made you want to do better — not because they pushed you, but because of how they made you feel. You didn’t just learn from them; you became a little different because of them. That, in the end, is what genuine, transformational leadership really does.

That is leadership. Not what you do to people, but what happens to people in your presence.

What is leadership in practice, then?

If leadership is an imprint, then every interaction is leaving one — for better or worse. The leader who listens shapes people differently from the one who dominates. It’s the same quiet difference between a culture built on emotional well-being and humanising the workplace and one that slowly hardens into the fear-based patterns of toxic leadership.

None of this shows up on an org chart. It shows up in how people feel walking out of a room you were in — a little taller, or a little smaller.

The real question every leader should ask

So here is the uncomfortable, freeing truth: you don’t just lead people. You leave an imprint on them. And the imprint outlasts the project, the quarter, the job title.

The real question, then, isn’t “Am I leading?” It’s — what kind of imprint am I leaving?
