All of us play several roles in our lives. We are mothers, daughters, spouses, parents, friends, employees..and we are constantly working hard at all of those roles. Today I invite you to look at that one person, who is behind all those roles, and that one person that is YOU. What is it that you are doing to take care and nurture the MOST IMPORTANT person in your life that is you. 

I never really understood the concept of ‘self care’. I played so many roles in my life and I played them well..to a point that I felt drained..I felt tired..I felt exhausted, to a point where I was even restful towards these people in my life for whom I was doing so much and I felt I was not getting back enough.

The question is not what they gave back to me, but what I gave to MYSELF. So today I want to ask you, ‘what is it that you are willing to do in order to take care of yourself?’ When you are ready post your ideas in the comments below because I am sure that would be an inspiration to many other people who would be reading this

First Five Powerful Steps to Self- Care

#1 – Take 30 minutes of ‘me time’ every day.

Use this time to connect with yourself and to pay attention to how you feel and what you need. Journal, walk, meditate, soak in the tub, read a book or simply do nothing. Try not to save this for the end of the day when you are too tired to move and your brain has stopped working. Make yourself a priority and know that you deserve it.

#2 – Nourish your body with good food

What you eat matters! Don’t skip breakfast, have a plan for lunch, and don’t starve yourself before dinner. Eat foods that nourish your body and soul. Avoid emotional eating. Ask yourself before you reach out for the fries or the chocolate “Is this food really nourishing my body?”

#3 – Do at least one thing a day that makes you happy

The happier you are at your core level, the lesser addictions you will have. When you are truly happy, there is no need for compulsive shopping, drinking, emotional eating, endless Netflix or any other escape addictions. Do at least one thing  every day that makes YOU happy.

#4 – Learn to say NO, firmly and lovingly

Let today mark a new beginning for you. Give yourself permission to say NO without feeling guilty. Setting physical and emotional boundaries is healthy. You need to learn to respect and take care of yourself. Self-care truly means learning to say no to the things and people that stress you out.

#5 – Stop criticising yourself

Some of you may be criticising yourself for years. Does it really work? Research says that an average person criticises himself/herself at least eight times a day! Stop comparing yourself to others and appreciate your own uniqueness. You are not meant to be like others! Celebrate yourself and all that you bring to this world. Consciously break yourself free from negative thoughts. Self-Criticism lowers self-esteem and build self-loathing and resentment. It’s time to focus on what you are good at rather than what is wrong with you.
